What should a regulated pharma team look for in data observability and DataOps tools?

Look for tests that run inside your warehouse so rows never leave, a recorded history of every test result and disposition, lineage from vendor feed to report, version-controlled promotion from development to production, and a deployment you control. Most observability vendors on DataKitchen's comparison pages, reviewed June 2026, deploy as SaaS. Open source DataOps TestGen is Apache 2.0 and self-hosted.

Key points

  • For a pharma security review the first question is where the rows go. DataOps TestGen pushes read-only SQL into your warehouse and stores only computed aggregates and test outcomes, so no rows leave your environment.
  • DataKitchen's comparison pages, reviewed June 2026, list Monte Carlo, Bigeye, Sifflet, Soda Enterprise, and Metaplane (now Datadog) as SaaS deployments.
  • Column-level lineage is where DataKitchen is weaker: its comparison pages mark TestGen as Partial on column-level lineage, against Yes for Monte Carlo, Bigeye, Collibra, Informatica, and Ataccama.
  • Most commercial pharma data is not a Part 11 record, so the audit trail you need is a business one: which test ran, what it found, and who dismissed it, kept long enough to answer due diligence.
  • Generic tools validate an NPI by shape. TestGen Enterprise's Commercial Pharma test pack, released August 27, 2026, adds 12 healthcare-identifier tests, including check-digit validation for NPI and DEA.

Two requirements matter more to a pharma buyer than any feature list. The tool can’t move patient-adjacent rows somewhere your security team didn’t approve. And when an acquirer’s diligence team asks whether a number was checked, you have to show the check.

Everything else is ordinary data engineering.

Is this a Part 11 purchase?

Usually not. Most commercial pharma data isn’t a Part 11 record, because no FDA rule requires you to keep it. Drug sample records and adverse events are the exceptions, and they belong in validated systems. For sales, specialty pharmacy, and territory data, the audit trail you need is a business one. Due diligence checks whether the commercial story is accurate, auditable, and defensible.

Deployment control is the row with the longest track record in pharma. One DataKitchen customer has had 41 people from five companies work the same data for seven years, still in production, with 594 automated tests as the contract between them. The commercial pharma FAQ names it: the BMS CAR-T warehouse.

Read the lineage column as a real gap. If your auditors want automatic column-level lineage from feed to dashboard, several SaaS tools do more there than we do.

Test where the data breaks

A tool that only watches the gold table finds out last. The four testing points in a layered architecture are source quality, ingestion monitoring, tripwires between transforms, and regression tests in CI. In pharma the source point carries most of the weight, because vendor feeds arrive partial or restated and look fine.

Check identifiers properly too. An NPI’s tenth digit is a Luhn check digit, so a ten-digit pattern test passes a transposed number and the join drops the prescriber with no error.

Observability and testing are separate jobs. Monitors catch late and missing data; tests catch wrong values. You need both, and process observability watches the tools in between.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the follow-up questions people ask next.

Do data quality tools copy our data out of our cloud?

It depends on the vendor. DataKitchen's comparison pages, reviewed June 2026, list Monte Carlo, Bigeye, Sifflet, Soda Enterprise, and Metaplane as SaaS deployments. DataOps TestGen pushes read-only SQL into your warehouse and stores only computed aggregates and test outcomes, so no rows leave. For a pharma security review, where the rows go is usually the first question.

What audit trail should a pharma data quality tool keep?

A record of every test run, what it found, and who acted on it. DataOps TestGen keeps test result history and records every disposition with an audit trail. DataOps Automation adds Git-based version control and centralized activity logging for pipeline changes. That record is what answers a due diligence question about whether a reported number was checked.

Does DataKitchen provide column-level lineage?

Partly. DataKitchen's comparison pages mark TestGen as Partial on column-level lineage, against Yes for Monte Carlo, Bigeye, Collibra, Informatica, and Ataccama. DataOps Observability maps data journeys instead: the chain of pipelines, datasets, and tools behind a report, with status on every step. If automated column-level lineage is a hard requirement, weigh that gap honestly.

Why does deployment control matter for regulated teams?

Because an untested change to a shared pipeline is how one team breaks another team's report. DataOps Automation promotes work from isolated development environments through testing to production on demand, with tests at every step. On the BMS CAR-T warehouse, 41 contributors from five companies worked one codebase over seven years because tests were the contract.

Do generic data quality tools understand pharma identifiers?

Mostly by shape. A pattern test that counts 10 digits accepts an NPI with two transposed digits, and the join silently drops the prescriber. TestGen Enterprise's Commercial Pharma test pack, released August 27, 2026, adds 12 healthcare-identifier tests: check digits for NPI and DEA, three NDC-level tests, and shape tests for ICD, HCPCS J-codes, and NCT numbers.
